SUSTAINABILITY
The White House Nursing Home is committed to promoting sustainability within its business operations and helping to mitigate the impact of climate change on future generations. In line with this commitment and led by our appointed Green Champion - Home Services Administrator, Shirley - we have introduced numerous sustainable projects, and pledge to continue to implement greener and more sustainable initiatives where possible.
RECYCLING
All our used batteries are now rigorously recycled, and we are a community battery recycling hub for other residents in the local community to drop off used batteries for recycling. Additionally to recycling paper, plastic and aluminium, we recycle other items such as ink cartridges, as well as having an E-waste box for electrical items.
FOSTERING BIODIVERSITY AND WATER CONSERVATION
We have developed a wildflower area in our back garden to encourage bees, butterflies and caterpillars, and bird feeders to encourage local wildlife. Additionally, a water butt in our front car park collects rainwater for plant watering.
ELIMINATING SINGLE USE PLASTICS
We have made a conscious move to limit use of single use plastics. Visitors are now offered drinks in a glass or paper cup, that can be washed and reused or recycled. Additionally, we are working towards eliminating plastic bottles used for liquids such as soap and shampoo and cleaning products, and looking to implement refillable systems.
PLANT A TREE INITIATIVE
We introduced our 'Plant a Tree' initiative, aligning with the National Trust's goal to plant twenty million trees by 2030. This initiative allows us to commemorate residents by donating to the National Trust. In return, a tree is planted in their memory, contributing to environmental sustainability, habitat creation for wildlife, and promoting overall well-being. Families receive a digital certificate from the National Trust, creating a poignant and lasting tribute to our residents.
PLANT BASED MENU OPTIONS
We have begun a new sustainable initiative of including many plant-based and meat free dining options during mealtime. This is beneficial for the planet, and the health benefits of increasing vegetables in residents' diet will naturally contribute to improving nutrients and vitamins consumption, and thereby the overall health of our residents.
GLOBAL RESEARCH
The White House is a partner of the National Institute of Health and Care Research and actively involve ourselves in projects that are dedicated to advancing future healthcare practices. A recent collaboration included a study to assist the government with data and preparedness for Climate Change in Nursing Homes.
